Portugal NHR tax regime for immigrants?

As an immigrant considering moving to Portugal, I've heard about the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime and its potential benefits. I'm looking for a clear explanation of how the NHR regime works, who is eligible, and what kind of tax advantages it offers to new residents. I want to understand if this regime would be beneficial for my financial situation upon relocating.

The Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime was one of Portugal's biggest draws for immigrants. Here's the current status:

⚠️ Important Update (2024/2025)

The classic NHR program was officially ended for new applicants as of January 1, 2024. However, a revised version exists:

NHR 2.0 (IFICI regime)

  • Available to those who haven't been Portuguese tax residents in the past 5 years
  • 20% flat tax on qualifying Portuguese-source employment income
  • Tax exemption on most foreign-source income
  • Duration: 10 years
  • Targets: Scientific researchers, qualified professionals, and specific sectors

Who still benefits?

  • Those who registered for NHR before Dec 31, 2023 keep their benefits for the full 10-year period
  • New arrivals can apply for NHR 2.0 if they qualify under specific professional categories
